Clearing the stem.
Hookah culture has developed its own set of terms — some from the professional jargon of hookah masters, others from everyday conversation among smokers. Knowing them helps make sense of reviews, forums, and conversations at hookah lounges.
Shaft (stem) — the central tube connecting the bowl to the base. Base — the container holding the liquid the smoke passes through. Heat management device (HMD) — a metal attachment on the bowl that distributes heat from the coal and keeps it from touching the tobacco directly. Diffuser — an attachment on the bottom of the shaft that breaks up air bubbles in the base for a smoother draw. Purge valve — a mechanism that lets you clear stale smoke from the hookah without disassembling it, releasing it through a separate opening.
Funnel bowl (funakuchi-style) — a bowl with a wide flat bottom, popular for even heating. Phunnel bowl — a bowl with a raised center channel that keeps juice or honey off the coal in "juicehead" packing styles. Vortex bowl — a bowl with a funnel-shaped indentation in the center that speeds up the initial heat-up.
Packing — the method of arranging tobacco in the bowl (dense, fluffy, "under foil"). Break-in (heat-up) — the initial phase of smoking, when the bowl and tobacco are just reaching working temperature. Cruising heat — the stable, comfortable heat level after break-in, when the hookah smokes evenly for an extended period. Scorching — tobacco burning due to excess heat, producing a bitter aftertaste.
Mix — a combination of several tobacco flavors in one bowl. Strength — the subjective intensity of a tobacco's nicotine and physical effect, not always directly tied to its nicotine content. Smoke output — how much smoke a draw produces. Headshot — a very strong, intense draw that produces a pronounced effect.
Hookah master — a specialist who packs and services hookahs, often at a hookah lounge. Packing a hookah — preparing a bowl of tobacco for smoking. Hookah lounge — an establishment specializing in hookah, often with a menu of mixes. Session — one round of smoking, from lighting the coal to finishing.
These terms aren't strict standards — regional and community variations exist, but the ones listed above are used almost universally.
